This week I ran my first career of the year, it was also my first competition out of my hometown. Initially hesitant, my friend's invitation pushed me to participate despite uncertainties about my readiness and mood, compounded by a hectic period of interviews and job evaluations.
Our destination was Yantzaza, a city we reached via a bus journey and then two and a half hours of travelling. During the trip, we engaged in lively conversation, sharing anecdotes and thoughts. Arriving past 6 pm, we found the weather pleasant though expectedly hot.
Upon arrival, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as participants and spectators gathered downtown. Amidst the crowd, an announcer and event staff set the stage for the competition. As dusk fell, more contenders readied themselves for the impending race.
Commencing around 7 pm, the competition featured various categories, starting with children and youths, followed by seniors and locals, and finally, the remaining participants, myself included, tackling either a 5k or 10k route. Opting for the longer distance, I geared up for the challenge ahead.
Setting off at 8 pm, I relied on my phone for timing, having left my watch behind. The initial burst of speed from fellow runners, fueled by adrenaline, required careful pacing to conserve energy for the latter part of the race.
Maintaining a steady pace through the first 5k, I faced a significant challenge around the 6k mark—a two-kilometer incline that tested my resolve. Despite the difficulty, I pressed on, acknowledging it as part of the race's character.
By the 8th and 9th kilometers, I found myself running alone, with most competitors trailing behind. Running the final stretch solo, I felt a surge of confidence and happiness as I neared the finish line.
Upon completion, I reunited with my friend, who had also finished strongly, securing a top-ten placement. Exhausted yet elated, we returned home, cherishing the memories of a successful race and another chapter in our shared experiences.
